The Science Behind CBD: Everything you need to know in 2024

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, has garnered widespread attention for its potential health benefits.  What is CBD?

CBD is one of over 100 naturally occurring compounds called cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound responsible for the “high” associated with marijuana, CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it does not alter your state of mind. This characteristic has made CBD an attractive option for people seeking therapeutic benefits without the intoxicating effects of THC.

 How Does CBD Work?

CBD primarily interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of receptors and neurotransmitters found throughout the body. The ECS plays a critical role in regulating several physiological processes, including mood, pain perception, immune response, and sleep.

The ECS consists of three key components:

1. Endocannabinoids: These are naturally occurring compounds in the body that bind to cannabinoid receptors.

2. Cannabinoid Receptors: There are two main types: CB1 receptors, found primarily in the brain and central nervous system, and CB2 receptors, located in the immune system and peripheral organs.

3. Enzymes: These break down endocannabinoids once they have served their purpose.

CBD can activate both the CB1 as well as the CB2 receptors but only in a somewhat less direct manner. But what it does is modulate their activity with other endocannabinoids that do not directly combine with these receptors. For emphasis, CBD suppresses the enzyme FAAH (fatty acid amide hydrolase) which degrades anandamide, also known as the “bliss molecule”. CBD might increase anandamide concentration in the brain by slowing it down thus enhancing mood and limiting stress.

3. GPR55 Receptors: However, it remains unclear, to this date, what effect GPR55 receptors have on the bone density or blood pressure. This may be of interest to bone health and cardiovascular function because CBD works on those receptors in an antagonistic manner.

Anxiety and Depression: Existing research evidence indicates that anxiety and depression could be calmed by U.S FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (FDA) approved CBD because it influences serotonin receptor and anandamide. It may also affect medications, so a person using prescription drugs should consult with a doctor before using CBD.

CBD’s pharmacology is rather intricate but it is exciting nevertheless because the compound influences an extensive variation of biological systems and pathways. CBD contact receptors and the endocannabinoid system indicating possible benefits when used to treat health issues like chronic pain, anxiety, epilepsy, and inflammation. Although it is still possible to open a vast field of investigation, preliminary studies indicate that CBD may be quite helpful in maintaining health, though not making people high, like THC.
